On Wednesday February 15, the fashion forward fled downtown to the soon to be opened semi private lounge, The Elsinore.

Inside the private construction party hosted by owner Noel Ashman, guests sipped on MEDEA cocktails while models circulated in over a dozen designs from Richie Rich and Ross Higgins’ Popluxe Fall/Winter line.

The Elsinore’s glass encased columns illuminated the bold and vibrant designs for the design team’s closest friends to take in.

Among the VIP guests in attendance were Dean Winters from HBO’s Oz and The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.

Lafayette High School Students Host Celebrity Workshop

Juniors at Lafayette High School enjoyed a workshop today, Friday, February 3rd, with a nationally known writer and producer, an author and an actor.

The celebrities came to Buffalo’s Lafayette High School as part of an educational outreach program through the Actors and Writers Book Club of the Writers Guild America East (WGAE) Foundation. The rest is a Buffalo story; writer and producer Tom Fontana is from Buffalo, his parents graduated from Lafayette, and he attended Buffalo State College…the same as Mayor Byron Brown, who he has become friends with. When it came time for novelist Thomas Kelly, the chair of the book club, to choose a school to visit, Fontana steered Kelly toward Brown, who in turn steered him to the Buffalo Public Schools.

Fontana arrived at Lafayette on Friday morning, and after a quick trip to the “Wall of Fame” to see his father’s picture, Fontana, the son of 1942 Lafayette High graduates Charles and Marie (Internicola), and his friends made their way to the 2nd floor library to meet with students.

Joining Kelly and Fontana was Dean Winters, an actor who stars as Ryan O’Reily on HBO’s Oz and Tina Fey’s boyfriend on 30 Rock. Winters read a passage of The Great Gatsby, the students’ current literature assignment. Winters shared his thoughts on reading with the students, saying it was a necessary evil until he was 14 years old. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Gatsby hooked him, Winters said, and then he went right on to Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Winters graciously answered a few questions about the craft of acting (and Angelina Jolie), but for the most part, he deferred to the writers, Kelly and Fontana, saying “these guys are the geniuses.” Winters stressed the constant need to practice and expand one's craft.

Fontana, writer of St. Elsewhere, Homicide: Life on the Street, Oz, and so many more shows, plays and articles, talked about what it takes to be a writer, and the hours that have to be invested in writing every single day. He told the students that he had a cafeteria job in his high school that started at 7 every morning, so he would get up at 5:00a.m., every day, to write for an hour before he had to get ready and get to school. He made the hour sound precious to the students, explaining that it was something he knew was his – and he filled it the way he wanted to.

Thomas Kelly is the author of three novels, Payback, The Rackets and Empire Rising, and is currently the writer/producer on the CBS series Blue Bloods. Kelly explained his first-generation working-class roots in New York City, telling the students that an admission as a kid that he wanted to be a writer would have earned him a good, sound pounding from the neighborhood thugs – or his brothers. Nevertheless, Kelly is the first and only one of his family to earn a college degree. He graduated from Fordham University and went on for a master’s from Harvard--after a 10-year career as a construction worker.

Mayor Brown joined the group for a while. He stood in the back of the room and listened to the stories the trio told of growing up and deciding what to be, and then pursuing it at every opportunity. He then thanked the guild members, Principal Naomi Cerre, and the students for the attention that was given to the pursuit of education and for recognizing the importance of reading and writing.

For their part, the students learned a lot today. As much as the highly successful visitors were there to reinforce the importance of reading and writing, the message the students took in went far deeper: Hard work and dedication brings success.

It's not often that high school students get to spend a morning picking the brains of an Emmy award-winning writer, a critically acclaimed novelist and a TV star who has appeared on the hit series "30 Rock."

Clearly, it wasn't your run-of-the-mill morning at Lafayette High School on Friday.

Screenwriter Tom Fontana, novelist Thomas Kelly and actor Dean Winters held court in the library of the West Side school. It was part of an ongoing outreach effort by the Writers Guild of America East Foundation to encourage reading and promote the craft of storytelling.

About 50 students received some sage advice from the trio.

Tenacity, being willing to start at the bottom and practicing one's craft on a daily basis were among the tips served up during an event that was billed by the school district as a "celebrity workshop."

Changing technology has made it possible for budding filmmakers to snare attention regardless of where they live, said Fontana, a Buffalo native who has written and produced television series that include "St. Elsewhere," "Oz" and "Homicide: Life on the Street." He told his captivated audience that there are "enormous opportunities in Buffalo.

"You can get a camera. You can write a story. You can get some actors. You can shoot a film," Fontana said. "It can become a calling card for you to get people to pay attention to you."

Winters, who has portrayed Tina Fey's charmless boyfriend in "30 Rock," said the Internet can be a powerful tool for promoting independent films. Winters noted that Justin Bieber's meteoric career might have never taken off if he hadn't appeared on YouTube.

Winters said he arrived in Buffalo in predawn darkness Friday because he had been taping an episode of "30 Rock" the night before. One of his best-known roles was in HBO's award-winning series "Oz."

He encouraged students to get into the routine of practicing their craft every single day.

Kelly, the author of the novels "Empire Rising" and "Payback," agreed that it's critical for students to hone their creative skills on a regular basis. He said writing could be compared to carpentry or other skills.

"The more you do it, the better you get at it," he said.

Tenacity is key to success in the writing world, Kelly said, noting that it took him a decade to write and publish his first novel. He also challenged students to become voracious readers.

Lafayette High senior Angel Dysart-Nunekpeko said she gleaned valuable information from the unusual session.

"I took away [from the discussion] that hard work does make a difference," she said.

She said she loves to write but never feels like she has the time. After chatting with people who have made it big in the television and literary arenas, she said she's committed to carving out time to write, even if it means getting up earlier or passing up on other weekend activities.

"If I really want something, I have to make the time for it, and I can't let anything stand in the way," she said.

Mayor Byron W. Brown also made an appearance at Fontana's request. They are both alumni of Buffalo State College and are friends.

Fontana, whose parents attended Lafayette, said he was impressed with the students he encountered at the school.

"Today, I met a bunch of wonderful young people who I think will continue to make this city grow and make us all proud," he said.
